Product Description
Bringing a new level of versatility and capability to flash photography, the Speedlite 430EX II features a powerful flash (guide number of 141 ft./43m at ISO 100) with a fast recycling time in a compact, durable body. A one-touch quick-lock mechanism makes it easy to attach or detach the 430EX II from the camera and a metal foot has been added for strength and durability. Flash controls can now be set through the camera's LCD screen on compatible EOS Digital SLR cameras. The Speedlite 430EX II is also quieter, recycle time is 20 percent faster (as compared to the 430EX) and since it is compatible with canon's wireless E-TTL, it can be used as an affordable "slave unit."
This flash as a solid construction, full integration with my Digital Rebel XTi, very easy to use for starters just connect and ready in the auto mode. I'm very happy with this gift
This flash is a dramatic improvement over the popup. If you don't care about getting a flash that can act as a master then this is the best flash to get. It integrates well with newer canon cameras like the 50d. I would suggest getting two sets of rechargeable batteries, as it does use them up fairly fast.
Excellent product. I do a lot of histoical photos. So this was a HUGE help.
I have a canon SLR and wanted a better flash then the one on my camera.
Obviously this unit will be better than what is on my camera...and it is!
Look into buying the Gary Phong Diffuser to use with this. The combination is killer!
This flash is a very necessary addition to the built in flash on the new Canon Rebel XSI. It is easy to stow in your bag and will really do the trick for you when the small built in flash will not. It works extremely well for beginner(me) and would also be great for any users that have more experience.
I am very satisfied and would recommend to anyone with one of the Digital Rebels.
This is a nice flash. A midrange product. I can not believe what BestBuy gets away selling for though. I got it for my wife who is learning herself so I did not want to get a cheap flash. I think this one is perfect for the novice who wants to be more.
i have to say i really like this Flash ..its very powerful and doesnt use much battery .i use it all time and love the color on my photo's .gives a natural color on pictures and its great to have it.i think any one use SLR camera like i do ,,doesnt need to invest too much on expensive Flashes.
This item works great and does a great job for me.
WHat can I say, it's a Canon, well made, works as expected, plenty of features. Also it's silent when charging between flashes,
The TTL metering on the flash is almost perfect, smoothly illuminating subjects in difficult conditions including indoors with competing lighting. With new batteries it refreshes quickly and is easy to adjust for exposure.
I finally added this flash to my Rebel XTi kit. I had been disappointed with the performance of the built-in flash for some time (this was not unexpected) and I got tired of relying on fast lenses or a steady hand.
There are two big problems with the built-in flash on the XTi:
1. It is weak, weak, weak.
2. It tends to overexpose things closer to the lens in portrait type scenes.
There's no cure for #1, but #2 can be compensated for with some planning and postprocessing.
Regardless, the 430EX II fixes both issues very very well. In full auto mode, the flash did the right thing 100% of the time - no more blown out faces in shots of people! It's also (obviously) far stronger than the pop up unit so you can get reasonable reach from it -- I'd say 2-3x the usable range of the built-in flash, maybe more.
Rotating the flash head up for indirect use creates much more natural lighting than direct flash illumination, provided that you don't have very high or dark colored ceilings. If you feel that you'll be doing a lot of this sort of work, than I'd suggest going with the 580 instead. This isn't really a mark against the 430, it's just something you should keep in mind.
Overall, I'm extremely pleased with this unit. I should have added it to my kit many months ago!
